request an appointmentWhat are physical exams?
An annual physical exam is a preventative health examination that most insurances cover and requires no copay on your part. During this appointment, your provider will ask you basic questions about your overall health, check your vitals, perform a physical examination of your body, give you advice on how to prevent any health problems, and possibly order basic lab work such as CBC (complete blood count), CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel), lipid panel, UA (urine analysis), prostate specific antigen, and HIV/hepatitis C or cholesterol if deemed appropriate.
Important Note: Physical exams are preventative only. Ongoing and chronic health issues require regularly scheduled follow up appointments with your provider.
What are the benefits of physical exams?
The main benefit of undergoing a physical exam is getting an assessment of your overall health and wellness. If your insurance plan includes physical exams, there is no cost to you for these appointments. Preventative physical exams allow your provider to detect medical problems early on before they turn into more serious complications. You might also need a physical exam to participate in sports, attend school, or begin a new job.
When should I schedule physical exams?
Physical exams are preventative only and occur once a year. On average, they are scheduled 3-6 months in advance, and must not be within one calendar year of your last physical, or insurance will not cover the bill.
Why am I receiving a bill for my physical exam appointment?
During the physical exam, your provider may need to address ongoing health issues if you have not followed up regularly about them. If that occurs, the physical appointment will include a sick visit charge and additional services being billed to you and your insurance. Chronic problems are to be treated directly and require more regular follow up appointments than an annual preventative physical.
If you’re in good health and have followed up regularly as needed regarding your ongoing or chronic issues, your physical exam will be quick and effortless.
